First Look!

It has been a long time coming but three months ago my husband bought me a new camera… a DSLR! Wow! What a big difference from my point and shoot camera. I am thoroughly enjoying my new Canon EOS Rebel T3i with its EFS18-15mm and 55-250mm lens.

I started shooting with an Olympus C-2100 10x optical zoom digital camera and then upgraded to the Olympus SP-560UZ 18x optical zoom. I must tell you that when I purchased my second Olympus camera my hubby thought that I should get a DSLR. Of course I convinced myself that I had not mastered the skills to warrant that kind of an investment. I quickly out grew my Olympus SP-560. I realized that I had made a big mistake and I found myself lamenting about passing up on the opportunity to purchase a DSLR camera. I knew that my husband was ready to make that investment but I told myself that I was simply not ready. With that being said, let me share with you some words of wisdom that have helped me on my photography journey.

If you truly have a passion for photography then...

1. Don’t second guess yourself; it will only undermine what you know that you can do.

2. Stick with your photography.

3. Don’t make excuses for your photos, suggesting that your photos could be better if you had a different camera.

4. Work with the camera that you have and shoot the heck out of it.

5. The photography world is constantly changing and you should be prepared to change with it.

So if you are just beginning your photography journey, whether it is as a professional photographer, an amateur photographer, or as a weekend hobby I hope that you will remember my five photographer points of wisdom.

We Will Step Up!

“While we may be proud Democrats or proud Republicans, we are prouder to be Americans” – President Barack Obama

I recently watched a report on a popular news magazine show about a well known restaurant chain that was donating unserved foods to local food banks. The report also highlighted their food recycling process which provided additional meals to missions, shelters and after care programs. Each personal story about being hungry and receiving meals was very touching as well as heart wrenching. As I thought about this report and other making a difference stories, these words came to mind… Americans Will Step Up!

During this period of hard economic times and gradual recovery these stories are refreshing, infusing us with a sense of hope and shinning a light on change.  Our normal way of doing business has certainly been challenged. As the restaurant CEO admitted to the reporter it would be cheaper to just throw away the food at the end of the night. But because of the enormous amount of people who face hunger in our country everyday this CEO decided that he needed to do something about this. He soon discovered that some of his restaurant managers had already started donating unserved foods to local food banks as ‘random acts of kindness’. This restaurant chain turned these random acts of kindness into their Harvest Program.

I too believe that for some of us we see ourselves as more than just a Democratic or a Republican but an American. We ultimately believe in change and hope for a better future ahead, not only for ourselves but for others as well. Our convictions and fortitude to help others and make a change or to simply “do what is right” will always guide us as Americans to step up!

Happy Mother's Day to All! 

Family Photos

A few weeks ago I began to do some “spring” cleaning, changing things around and adding some new pieces to some of my rooms. I must say that I borrowed a page out of my sister-in- law’s playbook. Her guest bedroom is surrounded by family photos on the wall, her bookshelf and tables. On a December visit last year to her home I remembered the warmth that I felt sleeping and getting dressed in her guest bedroom… I was surrounded by family history.

As I began gathering various family photos and placing them on the table in my guest bedroom, I said to myself I hope that my guest will also feel what I felt sleeping in my sister-in-laws bedroom. The unique placement of photos in the bedroom is truly special and creates a great room to spend the night in. Now I must tell you that my sister-in-law’s guest bedroom tends to be pretty cold in the winter and a plug in heater is provided for extra heat. But I can confidently say that the warmth that I felt was generated by all of the family photos, it was a natural source of warmth.

I believe that family photos play a role in tracing our history and shedding some light on where we started. My sister-in-law has a large family and she has displayed many family photos throughout her home. Each time that I visit with her I end up inquiring about one of her photos. The history and stories behind the pictures are priceless.

If you have a guest bedroom or even if you don’t, carve out a special area in your home to prominently display your family photos… be creative! Go through those photo albums and boxes and pull out some photos to display, purchase a variety of frames with different tones and finishes and display your family history. I am sure that you will hear some family stories that you may not have heard before.

First Challenge

                                         

First Challenge

I recently found myself side lined by a very bad cold, which left me spending more days in bed than out of the bed. I surrounded myself with a few of my must haves, my Daily Bread booklet, magazines, cell phone and of course my (paper) notebook. As I was leafing through one of my magazines my thoughts began to turn to the warmer days of spring and summer, days being spent at the beach and entertaining family and friends. This particular magazine had a great recipe for shrimp scampi linguine which looked so delicious. Hence this recipe became my first self challenge for 2012.

I must admit I have never been a real seafood cooking aficionado. But after reading this shrimp recipe I decided to challenge myself to try a new seafood recipe as often as possible this year. Especially with me now residing in a beach resort community where fish, crabs and lobster are in abundance. So for all of my family members and friends your visit will not only include rest, relaxation, and fun in the sun but some delicious seafood dishes prepared by me!

To the ones we LOVE

Valentine's Day is right around the corner and there is so much love in the air. Florist are working overtime, dinner reservations are at a premium, boxes of chocolates are flying off of the shelves, the really great cards are almost gone and jewelry purchases big and small will be presented to the ones we love. When I thought about the many different ways in which we try to express our love on Valentine’s Day I also thought about another way to say I love you.

The month of February has been deemed “American heart” month by the American Heart Association. The American Heart Association would also like for us to take the time this month to remind our loved ones to know their health numbers and to know what to do if a loved one thinks that he or she is experiencing a heart attack... with the focus on love this month I could not think of a better way to say I love you and to say how much I care about you.

For anyone who has lost a loved one to cardiovascular disease or to a stroke we know how important this heart information can be. So have a healthy heart conversation with the ones that we love this Valentine’s Day.

The HGR Method…

What an opportunity to be able to begin again, to start off fresh with new hopes, dreams, goals and aspirations. The goose pimples are forming on my arms as I am writing this… Wow! Yes, we are all excited about the thought of a New Year and what it may bring, but the $64,000 dollar question is how do we keep up this blood rushing through your veins excitement throughout the New Year?

Well, by applying what I call the HGR method, this application is the key to keeping that New Year excitement Alive and Well. HGR is simply this; to Help others in need, Give freely, and Repair relationships especially within our own families. If you have ever experienced helping someone in need, the excitement that you have felt from your actions is priceless. To experience what it really means to give freely leaves the giver feeling just as blessed or even more so than the receiver… blood rushing excitement! And last but not least when you truly seek to repair broken family relations you will open up the door to becoming a whole and healthy person… after all everyone deserves a second chance.

So if you would like to keep that New Year excitement get out there and help someone, make a donation, volunteer your time, run that awareness marathon and say I love you, please forgive me, and give me a second chance.
